It was late, one day in January 2015, and my friend sent me a video. I remember the month because the following day I called my friend “Hris” and told her all about my idea to change the world with my group and wrote all about it in my The PH Group (PH stands for Potter's Hand) book. It’s needless to say that it hasn’t happened 5 years later but I still have hope.

In the video, someone was conducting a social experiment to see if a homeless man on the street would share his money with him. So he did his thing, pretending to be poor etc. and the homeless man gave him either some money or all his money because he felt that he needed it more. I hope that I didn’t lose you with all the ‘he’s haha.

He and I, were so overwhelmed by the act of kindness that, he decided to give him a $100 bill, I think, and I started crying and decided to help other people in whatever way that I could simultaneously. I cried so much that I caught a cold. At this point I think that I should issue a disclaimer that I cry a lot so prepare yourselves.

The whole aim of starting The PH Group was to start a positive peer pressure group that was going to come together to undertake charity projects while networking. So I called up a few other friends, persuaded them to join and that group has been growing bigger and better every year.

NO, that’s a lie, that particular group was dissolved BUT The PH Group went on to collaborate with another not for profit group to organize a charity painting project every Easter Saturday since 2016 called Colour Me Educated , where we paint a school building and donate stationery. (This year’s was postponed because of the social distancing rules).

I enjoy watching beauty pageants. I love everything about them; from the auditions, to the glow up and glam, to the question and answer time. Everything. There was even a year that I ALMOST entered one but that’s a story for another day.

One thing I especially love is that the Queen for that year has to undertake a charity project and I really look forward to the contestants pitching their projects. It just shows how important giving back to our communities is.

Even though not all us will get very big platforms, like the pageants, or a lot of money to build orphanages or hospitals or schools and I think that there are a lot of ways help other people. The truth of the matter is that everyon

e needs help one way or another, even though some of us would never admit it.

We can make the doorman/security man smile or help out a friend or even hold the door for a stranger. Deciding to be a light in another person’s life shouldn’t be all about money or other grand stuff. It should be more about making a difference wherever we find ourselves; by being a little kinder, sharing our meal, giving GHC1 to support a cause, waking up earlier to talk someone through a problem or even spending time with someone who lives alone or has no friends or is feeling sad (Edit: now social distancing will be much kinder but you can still facetime or call). It can be a lot of things which can’t be fully quantified.

I hope that I can inspire you to strive to be the reason why another person smiles every day. I know that some people won’t appreciate it or take you for granted or even turn on you in the future but it will not negate the positive effects of your deeds.

Do you remember when you received that unexpected note from that friend that you hadn’t heard from in a while? or when someone helped you out when you were broke? or even when someone held the door open for you?

It felt very good when all those things were done for me and I guess that it felt good for you too. Every little act of kindness has a greater impact that we can’t even imagine.

So as we start this journey, again for me, I hope that you join me in making the world a much kinder place, one step at a time

Love, Renette
